Trainee Prison Officer
Prior to commencing in the role of Prison Officer, new recruits to Corrections Victoria must successfully complete the Pre Service Training for Trainee Prison Officers.
Prison Officer
Prison Officers assist in maintaining the good order and security of the prison, as well as supporting a range of services that contribute to the rehabilitation of prisoners.
Prison On-Site Projects
Prison Officers are often asked to hold additional portfolio responsibilities in areas such as Occupational Health & Safety, programmatic support roles, Indigenous or Cultural support, and internal staff training . Prison Officers may also be asked to participate in a range of specialised activities or projects that relate to the role and function of the prison.
Senior Prison Officer
Senior Prison Officers take a lead role within custodial teams, coaching, mentoring and supporting Prison Officers. A Senior Prison Officer’s role encompasses a range of teamwork, case management, custodial and security responsibilities, and they can be responsible for the day-to-day management of prisoner accommodation.
The Security and Emergency Services Group (SESG – Dog Squad)
The Security and Emergency Services Group (SESG) is comprised of a group of highly trained Senior Prison Officers who provide a range of services to both private and public prisons. Some of the services provided are barrier control and searching, emergency management incident response, emergency management planning, canine services, intelligence section, high security escorts, schematic plans, fire awareness services, urinalysis, compliance reviews and correctional staff training.
Industry Officer
Prison Industry Officers are responsible for the management and delivery of specific functions within a prisoner industry or service industry under the guidance of a Prison Industry Supervisor. The Industry Officer will assist with the management of prisoner employment, safe operating procedures and other OH&S legislative requirements and compliance with prison industry procedures.
Prison Supervisor
Prison Supervisors are generally responsible for the management of a unit or the delivery of a specific function, and may be required to be the officer in charge at the prison. With highly developed communication, negotiation and problem solving skills, the Prison Supervisor leads and manages staff to achieve program and service outcomes in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Corrections Project Roles
These positions may incorporate project roles at Corrections Victoria Head Office in Melbourne, which is responsible for the central oversight of corrections operations, as well as inter-prison projects, or projects within the respective departmental regions.
Corrections Management Positions
A variety of management positions within Corrections Victoria are available outside of custodial management roles. These include roles within other areas of prison management (for example: Business Services, Programs etc), Head Office, within the other arm of the business (Community Correctional Services), and other business units within the department’s regions.
Operations Manager
The Operations Manager manages the high level, day-to-day operational needs of the prison, contributing to the ongoing strategic planning, implementation, and improvement of prison operations in a changing environment. Operations Managers are responsible for managing teams of custodial and non-custodial officers working at the prison, so they require superior leadership skills.
General Manager
The General Manager is accountable for the overarching management of the prison. The General Manager leads all disciplines to achieve business objectives and performance benchmarks, identifies and responds to emerging strategic issues and develops and implements business plans consistent with Corrections Victoria and the Region in which they are located. The General Manager has a clear vision for the future direction of the prison and its role within Corrections Victoria
