Qualities and Skills

While there are no formal qualifications needed to become a successful Prison Officer, we find our best staff have a mature approach, are able to reserve judgement and have life experience.

Effective Prison Officers have a number of skills they can bring to the role including:

  • The ability to work in a team
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong people management skills
  • The ability to work under pressure
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Good written communication skills, as report writing is an essential component of the job
  • The ability to be a good role model
  • The ability to behave in a just, humane and courteous manner
  • Empathy and cultural awareness.

They are also:

  • Ethical, honest and accountable for their actions
  • Great listeners and non judgemental
  • Great negotiators who can influence and negotiate effectively

Although it’s not essential, it is helpful to have completed VCE or at least a Year 10 level of education and/or a trade or TAFE certificate.
