Drivers Licence
It is a requirement of Corrections Victoria, Department of Justice, that all Prison Officers must hold a current, and full, Victorian drivers licence.
Offence History Checks
The Department of Justice, Corrections Victoria, will complete a number of security clearance checks on your behalf to assist with evaluating eligibility for employment as a Prison Officer. This will include a Consent to Check and Release National Police Record and Finger Printing Check, as well as a Vic Roads Check.

First Aid Qualification
Prior to commencement as a Trainee Prison Officer, new recruits will be required to obtain a Statement of Attainment, at their own cost, for the First Aid unit HLTF201B Provide Basic Emergency Life Support. The Statement of Attainment must have been issued no more than months prior to successful commencement as a Trainee Prison Officer with Corrections Victoria.
Statements of Attainment will be recognised from any Registered Training Organisation (RTO) within Australia and must indicate the unit of competency HLTFA201B. No other First Aid units of competency will be excepted for the purposes of employment as a Prison Officer with Corrections Victoria.
Application of the skills and knowledge obtained in this unit of competency will be contextualised throughout the Prison Officer Pre Service Training, as required, to reflect workplace requirements relating to specific risks and hazards and associated injuries.
If you are successful in obtaining a Prison Officer position, you will be required to complete the above First Aid qualification, at your own cost, prior to commencing training.

Medical and Physical Requirements.
Candidates will be required to attend a Pre-Service Medical and Physical Assessment to ensure they are medically and physically able to meet the inherent requirements of the Prison Officer position safely, without risk of injury or illness to themselves or others. This assessment comprises a number of tests, including hearing, vision, flexibility and physical capability.
As a Prison Officer, you may be required to undertake a variety of physical tasks as part of your role.
These may include:
Fire fighting:
- Use of a breathing apparatus
- Possible work in confined spaces
- Use of fire extinguishers / water hoses
Searching:
- Prisoners
- Cells
- Accommodation areas / work areas
Responding to incidents:
- Self-defence
- Restraints techniques
- Application of mechanical restraints
Security Patrols:
- Internal and external to the prison
To make sure you are capable of undertaking the physical requirements of the job and the Pre-Service Training safely, it is part of the Prison Officer Recruitment Process that you must meet the necessary benchmarks of the Pre-Service Medical and Physical Assessment prior to employment.

Previously taken a Public Service Voluntary Redundancy Package?
If you are a previous Victorian Public Service employee and have taken a Voluntary Redundancy Package, you must wait a period of three years from the date of your voluntary retrenchment before obtaining re-employment with a government agency.
