Custodial Services

There are currently 11 public prisons and 2 private prisons operating in five regions across Victoria, as well as one transitional centre.

Each prison location is classified as maximum, medium or minimum security, and two of these prisons cater solely for female prisoners.

The aim of the transitional centre is to replicate community living as far as possible.  It emphasises self-responsibility and self-determination on the part of residents in their day-to-day lives.  As far as possible, residents’ needs are addressed through connecting with mainstream social and support services in the community.
