Reference Checks

As part of your application for the role of Prison Officer, HOBAN Recruitment will conduct verbal reference checks for the purpose of assessing and verifying your suitability for the position. Reference checks are a critical component of the recruitment process as they allow HOBAN and the Department of Justice to:

  • verify information provided by you
  • obtain information on your previous work performance, skills and behaviours relevant to the role applied for
  • seek further information to validate evidence obtained through the selection process

Appropriate reference checks must be completed satisfactorily in order for your application to be considered.

  • we do not accept written references. HOBAN consultants will conduct reference checks over the phone as they are required to ask your referees a series of structured questions around the key capabilities for the position in order to assist us in determining your suitability
  • you will be required to provide a minimum of two professional references. Your referees must be someone you have reported to in the last 5 years, ie: a manager, team leader or supervisor – NOT a colleague or a friend.
  • references must cover you for a period of 2 years. Therefore, if you have worked a number of short-term contracts or on an ad hoc basis recently, you will be required to provide additional references to cover you for the 2 year period.
  • wherever possible, please provide a referee from your current and / or most recent employment
  • if you currently or have previously worked in a Corrections environment, including Corrections Victoria, please ensure you provide a referee from this employment.
  • if you have not worked in the last five years, have undertaken volunteer work during that period, or operated your own business, exceptions may be made. If this applies to you, please think about long term business associates, clients, members of the community or volunteer organisations you have worked with, teachers or lecturers etc that may be appropriate referees

All referee details will be verified to ensure their accuracy.When providing referee information, you must provide complete and accurate information. Incomplete or inaccurate disclosure of information requested may result in your application being excluded or your appointment being withdrawn or terminated.

Reference checks are completed in confidence and only stakeholders involved in the recruitment process will have access to this information.
