As a Field Officer (FO), I get to work outdoors whilst still being an integral part of my CCS location’s operations. I supervise many different types of community work teams, which include graffiti removal or completing maintenance at schools, parks, cemeteries and playgrounds. I get to work alongside staff from a range of different areas such as councils, other government departments and not-for-profit organisations and I really enjoy the relationships I build with these people.
As a FO, I ensure offenders comply with the community work condition of their orders, whilst also ensuring that OH&S regulations are adhered to. I also make sure that offenders are being trained in useful tasks that will enhance their current skill base.
I love that every day is different and that I am faced with interesting challenges that I need to work through in order to get the best result for Corrections Victoria, the community and the offenders. Although it can be a very challenging role, I feel a great sense of achievement when I have completed an important community project and really made a difference to my local area. I also feel a great sense of success when offenders I supervise let me know that what I have taught them has helped them get a job.
The team of staff that I work with are very supportive. Although I work autonomously and need to be able to solve problems independently, advice and assistance is always on hand and I feel confident to ring to ask questions when I’m not sure about certain issues, or check back later for next time.
When asked why I do my job I often say that, whilst at times the work itself can be very challenging, the contribution we make in enhancing community safety fills me with a sense of pride and achievement. I know I have a long career with the Department of Justice.
